Curriculum
Computer Engineering M.Eng. Curriculum
Build your degree around where you want to go.
The 30-credit Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering combines advanced technical coursework with project-based learning designed to prepare you for complex engineering challenges.
Choose between two project paths, build a strong foundation across computer engineering, and use electives to develop depth in areas aligned with your interests and career goals. The current advising framework includes focus areas in wireless communications and cybersecurity, integrated circuits and systems, and machine learning and autonomy.
Degree at a Glance
Choose the experience that fits your goals.
Both paths lead to the same 30-credit M.Eng. degree. The difference is how much of your program is devoted to project work versus technical electives. The current CPE advising roadmap distinguishes between a deeper Project Intensive experience and a more flexible Project Enhanced option.
Core coursework
The current CPE advising materials recommend a four-course, 12-credit technical foundation that spans mathematics, machine learning, computer architecture, and networking.

Go deep where it matters to you.
Most students choose a focus area to build a clear technical direction, while the curriculum also allows students to mix and match electives to create a more tailored path.
Current focus areas include:
Wireless Communications, Networking & Cybersecurity
Learn to design, analyze, and secure modern communication and networking systems, from wireless transmission and network architecture to information security and connected technologies such as 5G/6G, IoT, and autonomous systems.
Integrated Circuits & Systems
Develop expertise in electronic circuits and hardware systems, including analog and digital design, semiconductor devices, VLSI systems, embedded hardware, and system-level integration.
Machine Learning, Data Science & Autonomy
Build intelligent systems that can analyze data, learn from experience, and make decisions through coursework in machine learning, optimization, sensing, control, and autonomous systems.
Students may also customize their elective mix based on their interests and career goals.
Build and test in Alexandria.
Most M.Eng students study at Virginia Tech’s Academic Building One in Alexandria, Virginia, minutes from Washington, D.C.
The location puts students near federal agencies, government contractors, technology companies, research organizations, and startups working across fields including AI, cybersecurity, software, defense, and infrastructure.
Virginia Tech Academic Building One
