The M.Eng. is a professional, coursework-based degree designed for students preparing to enter or advance in the computing industry.
Students choose between two curriculum paths:
Project Enhanced
Combine advanced graduate electives with a 3 credit capstone project for a flexible mix of technical depth and applied experience. Allows for fall or spring entry-term options.
Project Intensive
Complete a deeper, two-semester, 12 credit integrated project experience focused on technical development, teamwork, project management, and professional practice. Only allows for fall entry-term option
Both options are part of a 30-credit, non-thesis degree.
Credits required for graduation:
- 30 credits of coursework
- 4000 level or higher (6 credits at the 4000 level)
- Capstone project
- Ethics and Professionalism in Computer Science course
Build a technical identity.
Most students build depth across two focus areas, with structured coursework designed to develop expertise beyond the introductory level.
Current focus areas include:
- Applied AI and Machine Learning
- Cybersecurity
- Software Systems
- Human-Centered Computing
- Emerging Technologies
- Computer Systems and Architecture
Students can customize the degree through approved focus areas and graduate electives.

Most M.Eng. students study at Virginia Tech’s Academic Building One in Alexandria, Virginia, minutes from Washington, D.C.
The location puts students near federal agencies, government contractors, technology companies, research organizations, and startups working across fields including AI, cybersecurity, software, defense, and infrastructure.

A limited number of eligible students, including accelerated students, may also complete the degree at Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus.
Admissions
Applicants should have:
- A minimum 3.0 GPA
- Prior programming experience
- Foundational computer engineering preparation
- GRE: Not required
For applicants required to demonstrate English proficiency:
- TOEFL iBT: 90 minimum
- IELTS: 6.5 minimum
- One letter of recommendation is required.

Domestic applicants: October 1, 2026
Fall 2027
Application deadline: March 1, 2027
Domestic applications may continue to be considered on a rolling basis as space allows.
