With open access to an inclusive tech ecosystem at the doorstep of industry giants, and just a few miles from the Nation’s capital, our Alexandria, Virginia, location gives research faculty and students the tools to drive change.
Virginia Tech’s new 11 story, 300,000 square ft academic building provides the ideal space for experiential learning opportunities for computer science and computer engineering graduate students. Building highlights include: multi-purpose areas, research and testing labs, a cyber-physical systems lab, maker spaces, a two-story indoor drone testing cage, and more!
The central location just south of Reagan National Airport positions the Institute and its partners near diverse industries and leading tech companies in the growing National Landing technology district, including Amazon’s HQ2. The Potomac Yard-VT Metro Station, just a five-minute walk away, connects our students and faculty to the region, while allowing DC area leaders in academia, industry, and government to easily convene at our facility.

IAC Research Labs and Graduate Student-Focused Spaces
Labs and student-focused spaces in Academic Building One in Alexandria were built with the needs of computer science and computer engineering study and research in mind. Faculty and master’s and Ph.D. students with the Institute for Advanced Computing have a variety of options for lab, study, and gathering spaces within the 11-story building. There are labs dedicated to Wireless, Quantum, and Computer Systems – several of the Institute’s main research areas – and the two-story Loft, a highlight of the building’s first floor facing Potomac Ave., is dedicated for graduate students.
In addition, the Institute for Advanced Computing faculty and administration are located on the 3rd floor of Academic Building One in suite 3700 (administration and conference rooms) and suite 3400. Visitor’s welcome!
