The Institute for Advanced Computing’s location in the Potomac Yard neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia provides excellent proximity to government and industry, easy transportation access to the entire region, and an exciting spot at the southern end of the National Landing innovation district. Our graduate technology building regularly hosts industry partners for visits, events and summits covering the latest in tech, and gatherings for Virginia Tech’s more than 60,000 alumni in the DC area.

The Institute for Advanced Computing thrives on partnerships in industry, government, non-profit, the local community, academia, and more, contribute to a thriving ecosystem. Our location just outside of Washington, D.C., provides the ideal spot for joint initiatives and research partnerships with industry and government organizations. Partnerships are a vital component of the Institute’s mission.
We are seeking collaborative partners in innovation to integrate into project-based learning within our Master of Engineering program, expand the scope of university research, and build the technology talent pipeline, all while encouraging exploration, creation, and the growth of new ideas and solutions. Area partners who have mentored teams of Master of Engineering students through our Project Based Learning include Bloomberg Government, Boeing, Inbox America, MARI, Northrup Grumman, Torc Robotics, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Secret Service.
NATIONAL LANDING – A GROWING TECH HUB AND LIVING, LEARNING COMMUNITY
Establishing our research institute in National Landing gives Virginia Tech faculty and graduate students access to a mix of industry partners and growing tech hub. Nearly 30,000 residents call National Landing home, and over the past five years industry giants such as Boeing and Raytheon have moved their headquarters to the area, joining Amazon’s H2Q.
Getting around National Landing and the greater D.C. area is simple and convenient. The Institute’s location at Potomac Yard is steps away from the new Potomac Yard-VT Metro station on the Yellow and Blue lines, offering direct access to downtown DC, Reagan National Airport, and Northern Virginia’s major tech corridors. Students and faculty can live nearby in vibrant neighborhoods like Del Ray, Crystal City, or Old Town Alexandria—all within minutes of campus by Metro, bike, or foot. With dedicated bike lanes, walkable streets, and a variety of bus, rideshare, and scooter options, it’s easy to explore the region, connect with industry partners, or enjoy everything the DC metro area has to offer.
